Day 25: Mama Knows Best

This is the twenty-fifth day of 'Lacey's More Funner 30 Days of Blogging' which I talked about here. The end is in sight....

Also, it is worth noting that I started writing this blog almost 18 months ago, and I'm just getting around to finishing it now. I have no idea why I procrastinated on this. Anyways, some of the stuff I wrote may seem a bit outdated. For example, "when you have kids"...

DAY 25: WRITE ABOUT YOUR MOTHER'S ADVICE

My mama has all the best advice.

158a
  • When taking pictures, take 'people pictures'. When you go back to look at your photos from a zoo trip you're not going to want to see 30 pictures of a giraffe. But instead a picture of you in front of the giraffe. People pictures, got it?
  • When you have kids & a video camera, don't just record a 5 minute video of your baby laying in it's crib. Make sure you also pan around to everyone else in the family too.
  • Don't forget to sunscreen your feet! Sunburned feet hurt!
scan0171
  • Take a vitamin every day. "I swear that I never get sick as long as I remember to take my daily vitamins!"
  • Don't wait until you are on E to get gas. (I may not always follow this one!)
  • If you are on a strict budget, here are some ways to save money: don't buy paper towels or band-aids - you don't need them - and don't turn on your air conditioning until after Memorial Day. (These were the norm in our house growing up...I can say that I do not heed this advice at all, but in case of emergency I have this advice stuck in my back pocket for safe keeping.)
  • After doing a load of laundry, fold them or hang them up right away. Saves you the hassle of ironing, most of the time. (I WISH I could follow this advice...I try and try but I just can't do it.)
scan0057
  • If you are having trouble with something and getting frustrated, take a break and come back to it later. You'll no doubt be able to do it much easier once you've taken a break and relaxed a bit. (Okay, this is one she always told us when my brother and I were trying to beat Bowser in Super Mario World and we kept dying and we were maybe throwing remotes. As much as we'd hate to stop and try again later, it worked every time. Mama knows best.)
So even if it took me about 18 months to write this all down, her advice never fell on deaf ears. I value everything she's ever told me, and hope to teach Charley everything she's taught me. And one thing she probably didn't intend to teach me but inadvertently did, is how to be an expert procrastinator, but to always finish what you started. (Even if she started de-wallpapering her kitchen a year ago and still has a little bit to go! I learn from the best obviously and I know she'll finish eventually!) Which is why I am going to finish this 30 day blog challenge that I started on June 29, 2010. I just knew this was going to be a much anticipated post, so I saved it for a while to drum up some excitement for it!

What great advice has your mom given you?

    1 Year Later

One year ago today, I started a 30 day blog challenge (of which I only finished 28 days, oops) and Day 1 involved writing a letter to myself to be answered one year later. Well, today's the day. Let's see how much I let myself down. I am copying and pasting the original letter from 2010 here, and my answers from 2011 will be in green.

    Dear Me,

Hello! Hi! How are ya? Just dandy! Feeling good? Feeling great! It's so hot out, isn't it? I'm not sure if it's hot out this year...I've avoided any contact with the "outside" like the plague this year.

Anyways, how has your year been? My year has been good! Great, even! What are you looking like these days? Pretty much exactly the same, minus some extra poundage around the midsection. Same exact hair cut and just wore that same dress a few days ago. Still looking the same? Here's a picture from a year ago to jog your memory:

And here is one from this year, on the day that I wore that same dress:

    27w4d

Did you finally figure out those trip plans with Amy and Bryan? I'm ashamed to say, no. I cannot seem to get my stuff together and organize a friend trip. I even tried to plan a just Amy & Lacey trip and so far all I've done is talk about it. I'm so lame. If so, I bet that was fun. If not, you are a dummy and should have taken advantage of your youth! You're telling me! Friends are even more few and far between these days since I'm pregnant, and so I definitely don't want to lose these ones. They are one of the only ones that are still sticking around!

So, any baby news you'd like to share with me? Oh yeah, I'm pregnant! 6 1/2 months pregnant to be exact. Or are you still not sure about that one? Too late to change our minds now! I'm sure having your new nephew Wyatt around should help you decide. He is just about 9 months old, right? He is, and he is as cute as ever. He's pulling up on everything, standing unassisted and I'm sure will be walking before Charley gets here! Here's a picture from my latest photo shoot with him:

    260445_10150668074865257_578935256_18826294_7374152_n

Where are you living these days? The same townhouse? Sadly, yes. I know just recently you went and saw a house and decided to wait a bit longer to move. So, has it been long enough yet? I wish, but the housing market isn't on our side. We have pretty much decided on a neighborhood though, now we just need to save and get the housing market to play nicely.

According to plans, you should now be debt-free Lacey...you didn't let me down here, did you?? Gulp. Well, we are almost there. From what we had last year, we ARE debt free. But then there were a couple of new, no-interest deals we took advantage of so that's all there is now!

    Now....on to the important questions:

You do have the iPhone 4 now, right? Cause if not that iPhone 3G is preeeetty outdated. Yes, thank goodness. I was close to waiting around for the iPhone 5, but I couldn't wait any longer.

Do you still have 2 mismatched nightstands? No! We finally got some matching ones from our favorite place, IKEA.

Do you still have kitchen appliances in three different colors? Nope! All 4 appliances are now black!

Are you still keeping up with your clothing spreadsheet? Well of course! If so, that means your spreadsheet had it's 5 year anniversary just 10 days ago. I hope you remembered to throw it a party! Oops. Maybe I'll throw a belated party for it. But, yes, even in maternity clothes I am still keeping up with the spreadsheet, and even though my rotation is usually 3 weeks now instead of 4+ weeks between duplicating shirts, I am happy with that.

Is Tuna still getting some awesomely rad hair cuts? Not in a while! He's been mat-free for a while since John has been more diligent at giving him good brushes.

Is Reese still running at full speed towards every open door? I'd say mid-speed these days. Not only is he fat, but there was an incident when he got out (from running out of the front door) where there was a little fight between him and that stupid stray that we used to affectionately call Pierre. He seems to be fine, but he's definitely more apprehensive about running out since he got his butt kicked.

Anyways, just wanted to check in. I expect that you'll remember to reply in exactly one year. What's that? You are still having memory problems? Well, in that case, I'm going to write another letter to you that will remind you to reply to this letter and I'll schedule it to post on 6/29/2011. Hey! That's today! You better get busy!

    Love you lots,
    Lacey of the Past

So, I really liked the idea of this letter from year to year. So, I am going to write another one to be answered by 2012 Lacey. Stay tuned!
    .
    .

    Hey you...

...yeah, you. Lacey, I'm talking to you. Remember this? You were supposed to reply today. I'd say you should get right on that, but I know you don't do so well with being told what to do. So instead, I'll just politely suggest it. Thanks!

    Love,
    Lacey from one year ago

Day 29: In Case I Left You Wondering...

This is the twenty-ninth day of 'Lacey's More Funner 30 Days of Blogging' which I talked about here. The end is in sight....

DAY 29: UPDATE OLD BLOG POSTS

When we last chatted about my giant sunflower, I knew it was finally going to bloom any day now. The only problem was that I was leaving a few days later for vacation and if the sunflower didn't hurry I was going to miss it. Well, it didn't hurry. It did bloom while we were gone, but my BFF and cat-sitter friend Amy happened to notice it blooming one day we were gone and texted me a picture of it.

It's a good thing she did, because by the time we got back home, it had already begun to droop and would never gain it's posture back again. And the next weekend, impulsive John chopped down the beanstalk and it's now gone. So yeah, we never even got to see it bloom.

    ------------------

When I first got my new camera in May, I was determined to read books to learn how to use it. Turns out, I am going to need more hands on instruction...at least to get started. So I'm going to a class Thursday night which is supposed to teach me the basics - aperture, shutter speed, exposure, etc. - and how to use them. I'm nervous, cause I'm going by myself and I don't want to be forced to talk to anyone, but I'm gonna put on my big girl pants and go anyways. Otherwise, I'm really not getting my money's worth out of this camera!

    ------------------

My sister Christy sent me an email one day that said I was famous. Apparently one of my blog posts was featured on another blog she reads, dollarstorecrafts.com. Pretty cool, huh? And even though that was posted a couple of months ago, I still get at least a few visits from her blog every day! Hello, fellow budget wedding planners!

    ------------------

The Christmas lights are STILL there. And as I was driving through with my sisters and mom one day, they pointed out that duct tape was used to hang the lights, and it was also still stuck all along the edge of the roof. How on Earth did I not see that the first 10 times?

    ------------------

I did actually do it again. We went to the all-star race in May and although it threatened to rain early in the day, it never actually did, whew! It was a night race and was pretty fun. I still stand by the fact that the fun part is just the tailgating and not the actual race.

And this was the day that I decided I NEEDED a new camera. When it got dark, I was trying to take some pictures of the track and such and none of the pictures were coming out. The lights were all blurred and I could see the people in front of us had a nice camera and all of their pictures were nice. This was the best I could get, and this was after 394825 takes.

    ------------------

The "gyceem cuck" did actually come down my street again. My nieces happened to be over the night it came and I let them pick out anyyyything they wanted from the ice cream truck. Lindsay picked a tweety bird popsicle and Lori went with Scooby Doo. They both had gumballs for eyes which they thought was pretty awesome.

They were awful - the popsicles, not my nieces. Neither of them liked the ice cream, and so I suggested that they just go ahead and chew the gum instead. The gum was even gross. They weren't lying either...I tried to not waste the ice cream and finish them up myself and I couldn't even eat them.

Note to self: encourage them order normal things from the ice cream truck next time. Think: push pops, ice cream sandwiches, choco tacos, etc.

    ------------------

    Your prayers worked. Thank you!

    ------------------

Do you feel up to date now?

    Day 28: Band Geek

This is the twenty-eighth day of 'Lacey's More Funner 30 Days of Blogging' which I talked about here. The end is in sight....

DAY 28: WRITE ABOUT THAT ONE TIME IN BAND CAMP

I like to tell myself that I was a [Band Geek] minus the [Geek], but we all know I'm just kidding myself. That's like saying you are a cop that doesn't like doughnuts...impossible!

But, I did quit halfway through junior year, so that makes me less of a geek right? Kinda like a reformed geek, maybe? No?

Anyways, this one time at band camp....
    ...

...I honestly can't remember anything about band camp. Sad, huh? I'm pretty sure it was really hot and humid since it was over the summer, but that goes without saying.

When I picked this topic I thought that before Day 28 I'd remember something about band camp. But, no can do. So sorry.

I do remember where we went to get lunch everyday at this sorta-mall which had a pizza shop... that must count for something, right? And I remember we rode to lunch with a junior named Russ in his Monte Carlo cause we were just freshys with no wheels or licenses. (Thanks Russ!) But that's honestly all I've got. I'll keep digging around in the ol' brain (and maybe a friend or two from the band days can help me jog some memories) and if I come up with anything I'll let you know. So sad.

But anyways, anyone for a slice of overly greasy pizza?

    Day 27: Happy

This is the twenty-seventh day of 'Lacey's More Funner 30 Days of Blogging' which I talked about here. The end is in sight....

DAY 27: WRITE ABOUT SOMETHING IN THE LAST 24 HOURS THAT MADE YOU HAPPY.

That the countdown is finally showing less than one weeks time, until I will be waking up to this:

(yes, this is a recycled picture)

and not this:(not that I wake up in the literal sense at my desk, but definitely in the figurative sense.)

    Day 26: Saturday Nights

This is the twenty-sixth day of 'Lacey's More Funner 30 Days of Blogging' which I talked about here. The end is in sight....

DAY 26: WHAT ARE YOU DOING TONIGHT?

Well, if you must know (I say 'you' like someone else is asking, knowing that I am the one that came up with these topics in the first place! So basically I'm getting smart with myself.), I am decorating a cake for a baby shower tomorrow (more on that later)...

...and then going to a couple of friends' birthday celebration after that. However, I will not be "celebrating" so to speak, as I will be the driver of the evening.

    Day 24: [Red Face]

This is the twenty-fourth day of 'Lacey's More Funner 30 Days of Blogging' which I talked about here. I am trying really hard to catch back up, but the end is in sight....

DAY 24: WRITE ABOUT YOUR MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT

Do you ever play the ABC game on road trips? It's the one where you and other car-mates have to race to find words that start with the letter's A-Z on road signs. But you do get one 'skip' to use at some point in the alphabet, which is usually saved for the letter X. Cause finding a Xylophone Store or an X-ray Office advertised along the interstate is next to impossible. So, you skip X.

That's kinda what I want to do with Day 24, skip X. This dumb topic has held me up for 6 days now, and everyday I come back to it hoping to finish it so I can post it plus the other 6 blogs that follow it and I just can't finish it.

I think it's because I don't know if I have a most embarrassing moment. Since I don't get embarrassed nearly as much as I used to, the moments that would have been embarrassing to the old Lacey are just laughed off and forgotten these days with the new Lacey. But, here are a couple of embarrassing moments from old Lacey...it's honestly ALL I can come up with.

Middle school was rough for everyone, I think. Luckily for me, I only had 2 years of it because the school system changed from having junior high schools (grades 7-9) to having middle schools (grades 6-8) while I was in the 8th grade. So, I didn't get a middle school graduation, but that has absolutely nothing to do with my story. Moving on...

Anyways, I was walking out to the bus one day with my friend Kelly, and somehow my feet got all tangled up with each other and I tripped. I didn't fall on my face, but did manage to land on my knees....which caused my jeans to rip (and holey-kneed jeans were NOT in style at the time, FYI) and me to skin my knees. So there I am in 7th grade, kneeling on the sidewalk, jeans ripped and knees bleeding while hundreds of other middle schoolers are walking to their buses around me. I think Kelly laughed a little (but who can blame her, I can't help but to laugh when people trip too), and since this was before the Lacey that laughs WITH everyone, I was mortified. & that's probably the reason I still remember it to this day...and I doubt anyone else even does.

Or then there was that time at an extended family cookout at my dad's aunt's lake house. We were all fixing our plates and sitting down to eat. As I was walking back to my seat in the sun room (which was separated from the kitchen by a sliding glass door), I, you guessed it, walked smack into the door while all of my family looked on from outside. I picture it in my memory as having my plate in my hand, walking towards the (obviously very clean) sliding glass door, and the plate folding up against my chest, but I'm not sure if it was that dramatic or not. I think it's just the embarrassment of the situation making my mind think it was worse than it was.

But that's all I've got. Maybe your embarrassing stories are worse than mine. Care to share??

    Day 23: Parisian Sweet 16

This is the twenty-third day of 'Lacey's More Funner 30 Days of Blogging' which I talked about here. The end is in sight....

DAY 23: WRITE ABOUT YOUR FIRST TRIP ABROAD

When I was 15 years old, I took off on my very first flight which just so happened to be across the Atlantic Ocean to London, England. I was going on a tour of Europe with a small group of people from my high school over spring break of my sophomore year. On the itinerary: London, England; Paris, France; Lucerne, Switzerland; and apparently The Black Forest in Germany, although I may or may not have slept through that part.

Also, I would be turning 16 while on this trip in none other than Paris...only one of the best cities in the world! Sweet 16, indeed!

We started in London and saw all the basics: Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, Picadilly Circus, etc.

But here are the things I remember most:

    • It rained everyday and my new white-based tennis shoes were ruined at the very beginning of the trip.
    • The hotel rooms are tiny. So are the windows that we snuck out of to go onto the roof.
    • I was so in love with the fast pace of the city and especially the tube...it was my first subway ride ever!
    • All the lights and people at Picadilly Circus at night are exhilarating!

I could definitely live there, I think!

From London, we took the Eurostar to Paris. If I was starry eyed enough in London, Paris was just the same if not worse. Another city I could live in...well, maybe if they changed their national language to English.

What I remember most about Paris is this:

    • The chocolate crêpes are absolutely amazing. And they sell them at carts around the city much like we have hot dogs at carts in my city of Charlotte. I would much rather have a crêpe cart.
    • I celebrated my 16th birthday at the palace of Versailles with a few close friends...can you find me?

    • (our small group of 9 were on the tour with groups from two other high schools)

    • The Eiffel Tower at the time had a countdown on it for how many days were left until the new millennium. On the night we climbed it, there were 629.

    • I correctly ordered a four-cheese pizza for a few of us at lunch one day with my limited french: quatre fromages.

    Next stop: Lucerne, Switzerland.

Lucerne is a small tourist city in the middle of the Alps. There are a few main touristy things to do here: 1) ride the gondolas up Mt. Pilatus, 2) visit the Lion Monument and 3) shop for cuckoo clocks. We did all 3.

We also went to a fondue restaurant for dinner one night where there was yodeling, dancing and people (not us) chugging large mugs of beer in contests on the stage. We had such a good time this night!

From there, we took a bus through the Black Forest in Germany (zzzzzzzzzzz) and finally ended up in Heidelberg. I think we were only here for the last day, so I don't remember too much from here. I do know that the hotel rooms had awesome windows that opened out and we were dangling our legs out of our 4th or 5th floor hotel room!

I'm pretty sure that we also went to a castle that housed the largest keg in the world in Germany. Now that's fun, right??

(after some googling, turns out I was almost right. We went to the Heidelberg Castle in, well, Heidelberg, which houses "the second largest keg in the world." Bummer. To think I had already crossed that off of my life list.)

So that was a nice little jaunt through Europe for you, right?

And when I got home I told my parents that I loved it so much that I HAD to take them there one day. And in 2007 I was able to fulfill my wish. Although I didn't ($$$) take them there, I did my best to take-them-around there. It was even more amazing as an adult and on my second time around.

If you can go, I highly recommend it...au revoir, mes amis!

    Day 22: Picasa

This is the twenty-second day of 'Lacey's More Funner 30 Days of Blogging' which I talked about here. The end is in sight....

DAY 22: WRITE A REVIEW OF A FREE SOFTWARE PRODUCT YOU LIKE.

(Tomāto, tomahto - Picasa, Picasso...you get it, right?)

Picasa is the bomb-diggity. For one, it's free. Two, it's easy.

& Three - it does this face-scan thing when you import all of your pictures into it. It scans faces and then groups each person together, and once you've given each group a name it will sort any new pictures based on who is in them. So when I'm looking for some good pictures for any of my birthday posts for example, I just open up Picasa and scroll through each person's group to see all of my options. Take my brother Colt, for example:

But besides all of that, it is way easier to make my collages and headers for this here blog by using Picasa than it is using Photoshop. & that is my number one reason why I love it so.

I first learned how to use Picasa by following this tutorial here which explains exactly how to make headers like the one I have. Don't come back here bragging when yours looks so much better than mine...I do my best, darn it!

POST POST EDIT: Well, shoot. I can't figure out if Picasa is changing the original file or not. At this point I'm just going to yell, "HELP!"

POST EDIT: Well, apparently I'm either 1) a dummy or 2) a dummy, cause tonight while fixing some pictures in Picasa, I realized it was actually changing the actual file too, not just the file within Picasa, WITHOUT having to export the picture and have 2 copies on my hard drive. Wahoo! So, I take back these 3 paragraphs...oops!

But, there has to be a negative or else it would be too good to be true. So here is why Picasa is a good program to make collages and things, but not so much as your main photo-editing software:
When you are doing simple edits to your pictures, as in fixing the lighting, or removing red eyes, etc., Picasa does not save over the original file with the picture that is now fixed. You must export the edited version to a NEW folder...which means that yes, now you have TWO copies of the same picture on your computer taking up space. And I don't know about you, but if I've fixed a picture of it's red eyes and such, I no longer even want the old version.

& this is why I use either the Windows photo viewer or Photoshop to do any of those types of changes.

But, I did find one other negative...when you have a picture that is way over-flashed-to-the-max and it's hard to even see any faces cause they are all whited out, Picasa does not have a way to de-light or de-highlight. You can only fill-in more light or fill-in more highlights. No bueno, amigo. But for real this time, that's the only negative!

But besides that, it's great! Download it...you'll see!

    Day 21: Sweet Southern Goodness

This is the twenty-first day of 'Lacey's More Funner 30 Days of Blogging' which I talked about here. The end is in sight....

DAY 21: WRITE ABOUT YOUR FAVORITE DESSERT

"How on Earth will I ever choose?", is the first thing that comes to mind. I ♥ everything to do with desserts...excluding desserts that include fruit - cause healthy fruit does not belong in desserts!

So there's chocolate cake, yellow cake (think: birthday cake with butter cream icing), turtle brownies, chocolate chip cookies, cheesecake....the list goes on and on.

But, I think I'm going to go with something else: the classic Pecan Pie.

When ordering dessert at a restaurant, my criteria for picking which one I would like goes like this:

    1) Is there pecan pie? If yes, order it.
    2) If no, go with something chocolate.

I've really only been loving this dessert for the past 5 years or so, although pecans and I have been in love all my life. My grandmother, Manu (pronounced mah-new, FYI), used to send bags of pecans home with us that had fallen from her tree. I would sit in the kitchen floor with these bags with newspaper spread all around (to try and contain my mess) and crack and eat pecans to my little heart's desire. See, pecans and I go way back.

But, the pie always looked iffy to me. As someone that has a major problem with the texture of foods, pecan pie looked too mushy to give it a try. But, one Thanksgiving my sister Joy made a pecan pie that didn't look quite as mushy, and, it was heavenly. We've been together ever since and now I can even handle some mush!

But the very best slice I ever did have was just 74 days ago at a restaurant in Charlotte, NC. If you are ever in the neighborhood and love pecan pie as much as I do...you must try the 'Chocolate Pecan Pie' at Mimosa Grill. Heavenly, I tell you.

As for making them, I find them a bit tricky. I usually just go with this recipe which does not use corn syrup (which most do) so it is way easier and way less likely that I will screw it up, but tasty just the same! But, after having the slice from Mimosa, I think I'm going to need to find a recipe for a chocolate pecan pie instead.

Have ya got one, by chance?

P.S. I am left wondering how you are pronouncing "pecan" while reading this...are you saying "pee-can", "pee-cahn" or "puh-cahn"? I go with "pee-cahn" myself...it's like the best of both worlds!

    Day 20: Randomicity

This is the twentieth day of 'Lacey's More Funner 30 Days of Blogging' which I talked about here. I'm falling way behind, but I'm more than halfway through and determined to finish....

DAY 20: MAKE A LIST OF RANDOM THINGS YOU THINK ABOUT
    • I don't think I brushed the back of my front teeth well enough this morning.

    • While sitting in interstate traffic, I wonder how exactly traffic happens. I mean, on an interstate where everyone is moving and not stopping, how does it get to the point where there is eventually stoppage when there are no accidents?

    • How in the world does the inside of my windshield get so incredibly dirty?? I just cleaned it!
    • I really don't like when people post facebook status updates in the third person.

    • Another pet peeve: when girls don't get their heels fixed. When the metal is exposed and it's making that awful sound with every step you take, PLEASE take it to the shoe shop and get it fixed. That sound is like nails on a chalkboard.

DISCLAIMER: Those are NOT my shoes, I just am borrowing this picture from the internets to help some male readers know what I'm talking about.

    • I can totally understand why babies are so fussy while teething. My wisdom tooth is on the move again and I feel like crying and throwing a temper tantrum right here at my desk. Someone bring me a teething ring, stat.

    • I often think how much different my days will be when we have kids. Currently, I come home from work and decide how I want to spend my night: play some Mario Galaxy 2, work on my scanning project (I'm currently scanning ALL of my parents pictures from over the years so that my siblings and I will each have copies of everything), play some Kakuro, or watch T.V. Oh how things will change.

    • (Or actually, on second thought, things will NOT change. That little munchkin is just going to have to get used to how I do things and what I like to do in the evenings. I'm the adult and I make the rules! So there!)

    • And finally, I'm thinking about how this makes no sense: My brain is constantly thinking, yet, when asked to make a list of the things I think about, I can't think of anything. And so I keep coming back to this list hoping something will come to me later. But it doesn't. And this has happened for the past 5 days. Which has held up my 30 days project. And so, forget it! PUBLISH & DONE.

Now I have some major catching up to do.

    Day 19: Roses are Red

This is the nineteenth day of 'Lacey's More Funner 30 Days of Blogging' which I talked about here. I'm more than halfway through....

    DAY 19: WRITE A POEM

I am glad this little 30-day blog experiment is finally giving me the chance to share some of my poetry. I'm a poet, and I bet you didn't know it. I've been thinking about taking this one to a poetry reading one night so let me know what you think! Here's what I have so far:

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth

How are you liking it so far? It's good, right?

Or if you aren't liking that one, I am also working on another one that starts:

One fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish.

I can't decide which one is better.

But, since neither of those are quite finished I guess it's only fair to give you another poem that I have finished. So, I give you, "Milkshake."

Tonight we went to get a shake
(the kind which takes some milk to make)
From the golden arches down the road
(It's called fast food, or so I'm told)

We pulled into the parking lot
And the drive thru line was moving..not
So we pulled into a parking space
To order inside at a faster pace

But a couple of issues we soon fared
Cause for going inside we weren't prepared
John had no shoes upon his feet
And I had on no bra to cover my .... (s)

But our milkshake endeavor did not stop
As I handed John my two flip flops
And he left to make his way inside
To buy a shake for his fair bride.

Tick tock, tick tock, where did he go?
It seems inside was just as slow
    5, 10, 15 minutes now
What's taking so long - having to milk the cow?

But finally he came back to me
Looking as angry as a bee
But it took one sip out of the straw
    Chocolate milkshakes solve it all.

    Day 18: Smelly Childhood

This is the eighteenth day of 'Lacey's More Funner 30 Days of Blogging' which I talked about here. I'm more than halfway through....

DAY 18: DESCRIBE YOUR CHILDHOOD IN SOUNDS AND SMELLS

    My childhood smelled of this:

    • Honeysuckles: There were so many honeysuckles at my grandmother's house (we called her "Manu") and anytime I smell any honeysuckles I am instantly a little girl at Manu's house again.
    • Fresh cut lumber: Hehe, but seriously! My Daddy was always building something it seems....barns, playhouses, furniture, shelving, etc., and I think about it anytime I smell wood.
    • Fudge pots.
    • Dial soap. The original 'gold' kind.
    • Smoke. & not the kind from a cigarette, thankfully. The kind from a blown-out birthday candle. Cause in a family as big as mine, there were birthdays all the time!
    • Marigolds. I remember helping my Mama plant a big section of Marigolds at the front of the garden. Now, anytime I smell mine I am reminded of hers.

    And, it sounded like this:

(Go to 7:11 for the best part of it all!)

My brother and I watched this Golden Book movie: Sing, Giggle and Grin and another one called "Songs from Mother Goose" about 6 bajillion times. So much so that my poor Mama still despises when anyone starts to sing the beginning of either of these two songs:

♪♫♪ There's a hole in my bucket, dear Mary, dear Mary... ♪♫♪
    and
♪♫♪ Do your ears hang low, do they wobble to and fro, can you tie them in a knot, can you tie them in a bow... ♪♫♪ (go to 6:40 here...do it! Don't act like you are too good to listen to a nursery rhyme!)

I can't wait until she reads this and gets these songs stuck in her head once again. She's gonna love it!

    Day 17: Neese's

This is the seventeenth day of 'Lacey's More Funner 30 Days of Blogging' which I talked about here. I'm more than halfway through....

DAY 17: WRITE ABOUT SOMETHING YOU LOVE THAT NO ONE ELSE WILL LOVE

I highly doubt there is something I love that NO one else will love, but there is one thing I love that not very many people do. Especially those non-southerners. Y'all just don't know what you are missing! (& I'm one to talk...the pickiest eater of all!)

Livermush. There, I said it. It's good - really good. And I don't know why it embarrasses me, but when I order my livermush biscuit in the restaurant downstairs and then they call it out when it's ready - "LIVERMUSH BEEESKIT" - I feel like everyone else waiting on their breakfast wrinkles their noses at me. But it's good, I tell you!

Neese's is the only brand I've ever eaten. (Assuming that's what the restaurant uses too.) Lucky for me, they are apparently the crème de la crème of livermush, made right here in North Carolina, and apparently not sold in many other places. And if the word "liverMUSH" wasn't bad enough, they call it liver PUDDING, which is way worse, in my opinion.

To make it, you take your cube, slice a square off the end (much like slicing a loaf of bread) and throw it in a frying pan. Get the outsides dark and crispy and slap it on some toast or a biscuit. I put nothing on mine, but I guess some people like mustard on theirs. And voila! Breakfast is served.

Does anyone else love it too?

    Day 16: Homes, sweet homes.

This is the sixteenth day of 'Lacey's More Funner 30 Days of Blogging' which I talked about here. I'm more than halfway through....

DAY 16: WRITE ABOUT EACH PLACE YOU'VE CALLED HOME

I've called 6 different places "home" in my 28 years. 2 childhood homes, 3 apartments, and our now townhouse.

My first home I don't remember all that well. I lived there from birth until I was 4. I only remember what I've seen in pictures and also I remember the next door neighbor's playhouse out back. And that's about it. Moving on.

The next house I lived in is the one I always have dreams about still living in, and the one my parents still live in.

(old picture, but the first one I found so I went with it!)

I lived there from the age of 4 until I was 22. I could tell you lots about this house. Like how the bathroom floor remained unfinished for the first 6 or so years....unfinished as in just a piece of plywood. And when the bathroom was painted, some paint dropped onto the plywood and made a perfect duck face right there on the bathroom floor. I really missed him when they finally put some real flooring down.

I could also tell you exactly where 2 sections of wall were patched: my head made a hole in the hallway, and my brother's head made one in his bedroom on two separate occasions. I have NO idea how that happened! (That's my story and I'm sticking to it!)

Or I could show you the exact path through the woods to get to the dirt road, or the way through the woods to the big creek.

I moved out with my (gasp!) boyfriend when I was 22. You might know him; his name is John. We were low on dough and our first apartment reflected that.

We had a cute little one bedroom apartment on the 3rd floor in an apartment complex that is not in the best area. It's not the worst area either, but given the choice we would've been elsewhere.

Anyways, I remember that the nicest part about this apartment was the view. From our balcony, we could see the water...also known as the beautiful drainage pond in the middle of the complex. Beauty, I tell you. It was even more beautiful when illuminated by the spotlight of a police helicopter circling it one night.

Since were on the third floor, every single time we walked past the apartment of the woman directly below us on the 2nd floor, we could smell the strong aroma of real Mexican food...and the smell was not too appetizing. Bleh.

We stayed here exactly one year, and then moved into a nicer apartment in a better area.

The next apartment was on the second floor and we upgraded to a 2 bedroom. Moving up in the world.

This apartment would let you paint which was a really big deal to me. I can't stand white walls, so painting was a must. We painted the bedroom sage green, the office a pale yellow and the rest of the apartment a taupey tannish color. This was when I started to love to decorate and fell in love with Kirkland's. This entire apartment was decorated from that one store.

We got our first Christmas tree in this apartment. When Christmas was over and it was time to dispose of the tree, we dragged it into the small strip of woods that separated our apartment complex from the road.

We planned on staying in this apartment until we bought a house because we really loved it and had made it our own. But then one night it started raining in our apartment. We woke up to water dripping in our faces, and once we turned some lights on, realized that not only was it dripping in our faces, it was pouring in the entire apartment.

The apartment upstairs was vacant and had flooded from a busted pipe and was now seeping down to ours. After all was said and done, this apartment was no longer livable and we had to move (after only 9 months) to another apartment across the complex.

This apartment was on the 3rd floor so that made for a really fun move: down two flights of stairs and then up three, when we had NOTHING packed since it was an impromptu move.

We upgraded once again because not only did this apartment have 2 bedrooms, we now had two bathrooms. We were big time now.

This was the apartment where I finally figured out how to take care of plants. I had attempted some in the past, but never succeeded. I only had two hanging baskets of petunias, but my neighbors would always ask how I got them to be so big and beautiful. Ahh, my first gardening compliments!

And this is the part where I kick myself because in the 11 months we lived there, there are no pictures of the actual apartment. The best I can come up with is one taken right after I had finished decorating the Christmas tree. I was so excited to have (fake) hard wood floors in this apartment so I could just sweep up the Christmas tree needles instead of having to vacuum them.

And then finally, we made our first purchase and bought our townhouse. (Well, it's just John's technically because we weren't married when we moved here and didn't want to have that headache to deal with in case we didn't last.) But we did last, and now what's mine is mine and what's his is mine. Mwahahahahaa.

We upgraded a tiny bit since we now own instead of rent, but we are both ready for a real house. And ready SOON. But the economy and blah, blah, blah. So I suppose we'll stay put for a while.

But we have definitely made this house our own. We have had our first home improvement projects here, and our first landscaping fun, our first garden, and our first grass seeds sowed. It's a little tiny yard, but it's like a training yard for the big huge yard we dream about having one day.

So, are you in the market for a townhouse? I know just the place!

Day 15: You lucky dog, you.

This is the fifteenth day of 'Lacey's More Funner 30 Days of Blogging' which I talked about here. I'm halfway through....

DAY 15: WRITE ABOUT HOW LUCKY YOU ARE TO BE YOU

Did I honestly pick this as one of my topics for my 30 days? Bleh. Totally not my style. But, I guess I gotta do it.

I'm lucky to have such wonderful family and friends and blah blah blah...but you already knew that. But did you know all of these lucks:

    • When I was 8 years old, I won a coloring contest sponsored by a small bakery. I won a stuffed animal of some sort and I wanna say it was orange. Lucky me!
    • I called in to the radio and won 2 tickets to see the premiere of some Jim Carrey movie. I didn't hear what the contest was for because I just turned the radio on when they said to call. So I called and won! Then I was disappointed with the lame-o prize so I never went to get it.
    • I went through a streak a couple of years ago of winning tons of stuff through the radio station's websites...movie tickets, concert tickets, Christmas Ornaments, etc.
    • The first time I went to the dog tracks I was too young to bet myself. But, I'm sure the fact that I was there helped my dad to win $97 on his very first ticket ever purchased.
    • During college I worked at a large department store in the Juniors department. At the time, rewards for doing well (getting people to sign up for credit cards, having high sales $$, etc.) was called "Gratis." This was basically picking out an outfit and them writing it off. I am lucky to have worked with for a lady that took this concept a little too far. Lucky for me (and John) and our wardrobes, not so lucky for her when she got fired shortly after I left!
    • I found a penny today, heads up.

And lucky for you, this is over.

Day 14: Go Ahead and Laugh WITH Me

This is the fourteenth day of 'Lacey's More Funner 30 Days of Blogging' which I talked about here. I'm pretty sure I'm just setting myself up to fail, but I'll give it a try!

DAY 14: THREE EMBARRASSING PICTURES OF YOURSELF

I have no shame. I can do this easily. If you can't laugh at yourself, then the world is just laughing at you behind your back. It's best to just laugh with them.

    Picture #1
    Dated: 10/29/2006
    Time: 2:25 a.m.

We had just been to a very large local Halloween costume party where we dressed as smurfs. In order to become blue, we used liquid latex and painted our bodies. By the end of the night, a lot of it had either come loose due to sweat or a lot of movement, but the part that remained was around our faces. Think: forehead, cheeks, by our hairline, and EYEBROWS.

I didn't put the liquid latex directly around my eyes and just filled that area in with blue eye shadow. But, I DID paint around my eyebrows. Oops.

This picture was taken at the end of the night when I was trying to de-latex myself. John was smart and just got in the shower. I, however, decided to peel mine off. And when I peeled off the piece over my right eyebrow, the eyebrow went with it. Thus, my face when I saw the damage: Picture #2
    Date: 5/28/2010
    Time: 8:25 p.m.

We had just purchased our new camera a few days before. We are both still giddy and taking pictures of everything. John is playing with the camera while I'm on the computer. I am talking and flicking my hair out of my face.

If that's what I look like every time I do those two actions together, I will never be doing that again.

    Picture #3
    Date: 8/23/2006
    Time: 10:55 p.m.

I call this one, the botched winky face.

    Never. Again.

Day 13: Where Have You Been?

This is the thirteenth day of 'Lacey's More Funner 30 Days of Blogging' which I talked about here. I'm pretty sure I'm just setting myself up to fail, but I'll give it a try!

    DAY 13: SOMETHING I COLLECT

Okay, call me granny, but I have a thimble collection and I don't even know how to sew.

I have one from each place that I have traveled to since I was about 12 years old. I have them from places as far away as Rome, Italy to places as close as the Carowinds theme park that is right down the road.

Did I just go down on the cool-o-meter a couple of points? Or do you have a collection of some sort too?

    Day 12: Go Go Gadget

This is the twelfth day of 'Lacey's More Funner 30 Days of Blogging' which I talked about here. I'm pretty sure I'm just setting myself up to fail, but I'll give it a try!

    DAY 12: THE TOP 10 5 GADGETS I USE

    1. My Sedu Flat Iron - Use it almost daily and couldn't live without it - well, that's a bit of an exaggeration, but would you really want to see me walking around with untamed hair?

    2. iPhone - duh.

    3. My new camera, the Nikon D-5000. I am still quite the amateur, but I have been reading this book to help, and I think my pictures have gotten a little bit better:

    4. (Our sunflower should fully open any day now!)

    5. My Wii. I ♥ it so.

    6. Pet Hair Getter Offer - I'm obsessed with making sure that I don't have pet hair or lint on my clothes. I have one in my bathroom, one in my car's console and one in my desk at work.

And if I were playing by the rules, this is the part where I'd list numbers 6-10. But, I honestly can't think of any more gadgets I use. I mean, I COULD say my cheese grater and eyelash curler, etc...but what fun are those? So, 5 it is. I mean, and technically my iPhone is thousands of gadgets in one...so there. :-P
